La Casona at Matetic Vineyard – Adams & Butler

Iconic Hotels

Matetic Vineyards is a pioneering estate founded in 1999 by the fourth generation of the Matetic family, originally Croatian settlers who arrived in Chilean Patagonia in 1892 and established themselves as large-scale farmers before turning their attention to viticulture. The estate is located in the Rosario Valley, positioned between the coastal valleys of Casablanca and San Antonio, where the proximity to the Pacific Ocean produces cool nights, morning fog, and afternoon coastal breezes that allow grapes to ripen slowly, resulting in wines with fresh acidity and intense flavors. The well-drained, quartz-sandy soils require vines to extend their roots up to four metres deep to access water and nutrients, yielding low-volume, high-quality fruit. In 2013, Demeter awarded the estate full biodynamic certification, and all wines are certified organic and vegan. The state-of-the-art winery cellar employs a gravitational flow system to handle grapes gently during fermentation and aging in 1,800 French oak barrels housed across three underground rooms, with a total capacity of 600,000 liters.

La Casona, the estate’s boutique hotel, is a renovated 100-year-old estancia set around a central courtyard with adobe walls and colonnaded walkways, surrounded by formally landscaped gardens and an outdoor lap pool overlooking the vineyards. The historic building was fully remodeled and delicately decorated in 2004 by architect and designer Max Cummins, and features a cozy living room with a pool table, chimney, and honesty bar, alongside a sophisticated dining room with elegant wood paneling. The colonial building has 10 spacious rooms and operates as an immersive working vineyard experience, where guests can explore wine production operations, ride horses through the vines, and visit the on-site cheese factory producing artisan cheeses from the family’s sheep milk. Equilibrio Restaurant, located within La Casona, is built around a philosophy of respecting the origin and handling of its ingredients, drawing primarily from local products including the estate’s own organic garden. The elegant dining room is flanked on three sides by a tranquil lake and specializes in regional Chilean cuisine including seafood, duck, and lamb dishes, all accompanied by Matetic’s own wines, and is notably popular with locals as well as hotel guests.
