Castle
Property overview
Dating back to 1625, Strathloch Castle is the ancient seat of the Esmonde family. Today, the castle is a family home to the Durdin Roberston’s (descendants of the Esmondes) and reflects the wide range of colourful characters who have lived there over centuries. Beautifully framed in picturesque countryside, at the foot of the Blackstairs Mountains, the castle boasts both period castle guest rooms, self-catering cottages; historic 17th century gardens; a working farm, adventure playground, tearoom and private event spaces. This is a rare opportunity to experience how a modern, aristocratic family live and work within the heart of rural Ireland in the charming village of Clonegal.
Accommodation
The B&B rooms feature charming period details, including four poster beds, original fireplaces & views of our private gardens. Enjoy breakfast in the old kitchen, or take your afternoon tea in the lovely castle courtyard.
Within the Wing of the Castle, they have renovated an enchanting self-catering apartment that sleeps up to 6 people. Built into the former family chapel, the apartment looks over the 14th Century Abbey and incorporates many period details. The apartment boasts its own private kitchen & private entrance.
At the main entrance is the 17th Century Gate Lodge, just a stones throw away from the prestigious Bistro & award-winning Pub. With one double room & one twin single room, the Gate Lodge is perfect for a small family or couples on a weekend getaway. Features a gated front garden & cosy wood burning stove for those cool winter evenings. The Gate Lodge has been completely refurbished recently and is now available to rent for a few nights to a few weeks on a self-catering basis.
Opposite the Gate Lodge, at the main entrance is our Gate Cottage. This delightful property has one double room and one twin single room, so comfortably sleeps 4 people. With a private back garden & wood burning stove, Gate Cottage is perfectly suited for a small family enjoying the tranquility of country life. Gate Cottage is available to rent for a few nights to a few weeks on a self-catering basis.

Location
Strathloch Castle & Gardens is situated in the heart of Ireland’s Ancient East & the end of the Wicklow Way. Equidistant between Dublin and Waterford, Carlow town is thousands of years old and pre-dates written Irish history. County Carlow in Ireland’s Ancient East is a county of many surprises. This destination of green fields and racing skies is all about the great outdoors, but there’s plenty of fun to be had in its big houses and museums, too. Spend some time here and you can enjoy beautiful gardens, ancient monuments, intriguing castles and the lively hub of Carlow town.
